Should the social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have age restrictions at the time of joining?

While these social media platforms exist to encourage freedom of speech and expression, they also provide an opportunity to the young and amateur to exploit it in the wrong way. This is a result of pure lack of experience and wisdom to understand the repercussions of these platforms if not used the right way. Children are often seen sharing personal pictures and details with people they barely know or haven't even met. May be such avenues should be made available only to the mature audience in order to ensure effective usability of such features. By applying age restricting and adding a warning where the violators profile would be subject to deletion, a lot of ill-effects could be avoided. Don't you think?

may be they should have a Facebook Junior and a Facebook Senior to demarcate the type of content floating.while the idea of sharing views pictures making friends could still be kept intact, the kids can be kept away from the world of obscene/complicated/mature content made available to them by the age-groups they dont belong..right now everyone has access to everything!

Yes. There should definitely be an age restriction on social media platforms. Initially Facebook was available only to university students in the US. Then they began letting on high-school students and company employees. Later, when it was opened to everyone, they used to have an age restriction. However, now it seems that they're just open to anyone joining.
If these platforms do not have an age restriction, they should have some sort of filters which restrict content to people of a certain age-group (something like YouTube does with what it deems to be "adult content").
On the flip-side, it isn't completely possible for these platforms to restrict users based on age. Anyone can fake an age (among other things) online. There is no real way to put a check on that. It would be easy to say that parents should keep a check to see what their children are posting online, but that too is sometimes not feasible. With internet access becoming more accessible, children can access these platforms from places outside their homes.

Yes. The restriction should be brought in effect and practice, both. There should be officially technical restrictions along with parental regulatory efforts. Kids are undoubtedly vulnerable and parental guidance is absolutely acceptable. Required in fact.
