On a global level, environment policies are fine but how can an individual help to protect it?

Are there innovative ideas out there which are being implemented by active groups etc. which can be brought to the notice of the 'green policy makers' and other interested groups to follow?

An individual can help protect the environment only when he/she happens to know the methods and more importantly is told about the benefits in some good measurable terms. Unless we add quantifiable values and unless we evolve methods to measure the results of attempts to protect environment, we cannot work relentlessly on it. This is a fact, how so ever cruel it might be. So efforts need to be made in making people understand that their efforts in the right direction can yield a certain rational quantity of benefits. Besides, it must also be appealing to the people so that they get motivated to work upon them. Here I am speaking of the masses and it is they who would matter the most when efforts are required in all directions & in all corners of the country. This is easier said than done. But as an example one can quote that if a person makes efforts to save 10 liters of water every day then perhaps the taps in their houses would remain dry for couple of hours less than usual, which would be betterment to their existing facilities. Similar strategies need to be adopted and the educated people in India can be the horses for such courses.
many things..absolutely a whole gamut of things can be undertaken at a personal level to save our environment..start with saving water...planting more trees...conserving power..checking pollution..etc..
