Do we need the Govt. intervention in social media to ensure we use it responsibly?

The Government is trying to curb freedom of speech by trying to enforce laws which will enable it to remove that it finds as 'offensive'. Under this they have the right to force sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter to remove content which they feel is inappropriate. I guess this will curb the democratic environment of our country and allow the politicians to guard the content on the net. I strongly feel this is a wrong move, what do you guys feel about it?

Agree with you , its the most democratic platform does not require Govt intervention.
Twitter introduces geo-specific censorship. Checkout: http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/insidestory/2012/01/2012128131255440...?
Government intervention : Certainly NOT
Provision to verify the content or flag it : Needed
If social platform providers are not doing rightful things in wants of free content (Any character or word is just a content for them no matter if it is factually wrong or disturbing for many) then Govt. must put them to table. (Example : If these social platform are real mirror of our society communication structure, there must be a DISLIKE button because our real society gives us the option to say so)
I'm strongly against government intervention in social media. It is nothing but infringement of free speech. While there are people who use social media just to spread hate, the actions of a few cannot be used to form an opinion of everyone belonging to a certain group.
Also, intervention in social media could just be the starting point of intervention into our privacy. The internet is one of the best avenues that can be used to express one's opinion. And we have to look no further than the 'India Against Corruption' campaign to see how social media can influence society. The Arab Spring too proved how decisive a factor social media can be.
